Do not remove the valve just tighten the packing nut.

Start by disconnecting the water line from the valve.
Replace the washer and secure the valve stem and packing nut.
The fill valve is the part of the toilet that is responsible for refilling the tank after being flushed.
Turn on all the faucets and flush all the toilets associated with the main shutoff valve to empty the pipes of water.
You need to tighten the inlet of the toilet line in the shutoff valve.
If your fill valve leaks or if water continues to run after you flush it may be time to replace the fill valve.
Next shut off the main water supply to the toilet and detach and drain the pipes using a wrench or pliers.
Check the new valves for leaks.

Place a bucket or a thick towel on the floor under the leaky valve just in case some residual water leaks out during work.
If your water supply valve is leaking you may not need to replace it.
Turn on the water supply and inspect for leaks.
Turn off the water at the house s main shutoff then disassemble the problematic shutoff valve without disconnecting the valve from either the water supply line or the line leading to the toilet.
If the leakage persists proceed in the following manner.
Take out the screw from the handle of the valve and untwist the packing nut.
Close the new valve.
Hopefully this is enough to compress the rubber gasket so that it is sealed on the valve stem to prevent water leaks.
Over time a worn or out of alignment fill valve can become a problem cause a leak and wear on valve s components and parts.
Step 3 tighten shut off valve water supply line.
My valve is not leaking but the handle does not stop when turned all the way to the right any longer it just feels bumpy because of overuse of the valve to shut off the toilet after every use due to not yet changing a malfunctioning fill valve.
There s an easy way to fix it and you may want to give it a try.
If the leak persists before replacing the entire valve try this.
Then open the water main shutoff valve and let the water run until all the air is out of the pipes.
Turn the water heater gas valve back to on or flip on the circuit breakers to the electric water heater.

Now i have to fix the shut off valve before i can even attempt to replace the fill valve.
